During the steelmaking process, graphite electrodes will undergo some wear and tear, which can mainly be divided into normal wear and tear and non-normal wear and tear. Among the normal wear and tear, there are three types: arc wear and tear, chemical wear and tear, and oxidation wear and tear. Although they cause wear and tear to the graphite electrodes, the ways of use are different.

The most significant consumption refers to machine wear and tear, as well as breakage during use.

2. Chemical consumption refers to the reaction between the electrode and some impurities such as iron, calcium, and manganese oxides in the steel, or the reaction with iron in the molten steel. This consumption is directly related to the quality of the steel and the diameter of the graphite electrode.

Oxidation consumption refers to the amount consumed during the steelmaking process when reacting with oxygen. It is related to the atmosphere in the furnace, gas temperature, and gas flow rate. Among normal consumption, it accounts for 50% to 60%, which is the largest consumption.

4. Arc light loss is also known as evaporation loss because a temperature as high as 3000℃ occurs between the electrode and the charge, which will continue to consume the graphite electrode, accounting for approximately 40% of the normal loss.

5. Compared with HP graphite electrodes and RP graphite electrodes, UHP graphite electrodes consume less energy.
