How to Select a Ball Screw

Determine the diameter based on the load. The motor's performance parameters include the output torque, and if a reducer is also used, it should be taken into account (considering efficiency). Calculate the required thrust under actual working conditions. Ball screw specifications (obtained from the manufacturer) include load parameters (i.e., thrust parameters, generally marked as dynamic load and static load; the former can be referred to). Select the nominal diameter of the ball screw accordingly.

Determine the ball screw lead based on linear speed and rotational speed. Once the motor is determined, its output speed is known. Consider the maximum linear speed you need. The linear speed is calculated by multiplying the motor speed (if a reducer is used, divide by the reduction ratio first) by the ball screw lead, and this value only needs to be greater than the required value.

Determine the ball screw length based on actual needs. The total length = working stroke + nut length + safety margin + installation length + connection length + allowance. If protective components are added, such as a protective cover, the telescopic ratio of the cover (generally 1:8, meaning the maximum elongation of the cover divided by 8) needs to be considered.

Determine the ball screw accuracy based on actual needs. For general machinery, an accuracy grade of C7 or lower is sufficient. For CNC machine tools and similar equipment, grade C5 is commonly used, which corresponds to the domestic standards of roughly P5-P4 and P4-P3 grades.
