Magnesium alloy products have many advantages, which are as follows:
Physical performance advantages
Light weight: The density of magnesium alloy is approximately 1.8g/cm³, which is 30% lower than that of aluminum alloy and 80% lighter than steel. Under the same rigidity conditions, 1kg of magnesium alloy has the same strength as 18kg of aluminum and 2.1kg of steel, effectively reducing the weight of the product. For example, in the automotive and aerospace industries, it can reduce energy consumption.
Higher specific strength and specific stiffness: The specific strength of magnesium alloy is significantly higher than that of aluminum alloy and steel, and its specific stiffness is comparable to that of aluminum alloy and steel, while being much higher than that of engineering plastics. It is 10 times higher than that of common plastics. It can ensure strength while reducing the weight of the structure.
Good thermal conductivity: The thermal conductivity of magnesium alloy is slightly lower than that of aluminum alloy and copper alloy, but much higher than that of titanium alloy. Its specific heat is close to that of water, and it is the highest among commonly used alloys. It can effectively dissipate heat, such as in electronic products like laptops, it can prevent overheating.
Mechanical performance advantages
Excellent shock absorption and noise reduction: Magnesium has excellent elastic damping properties, which can absorb vibrations and noise. Under the same load, its shock absorption performance is 100 times that of aluminum and 300-500 times that of titanium alloys, and its impact resistance is 20 times that of plastic. When used for equipment shells, it can reduce noise transmission, prevent impact and prevent denting damage.
Good fatigue resistance: The fatigue limit of magnesium alloys is high, and they can withstand large impact loads. They are less likely to experience fatigue failure during long-term use and can extend the service life of the product.
Processing performance advantages
Good die-casting property: Magnesium alloy allows the minimum wall thickness of the casting to reach 0.6mm, which is beyond the reach of plastics under the same strength. Magnesium alloy is easier to be die-cast and is suitable for large-scale die-casting production. The production speed can reach 1.5 times that of aluminum, and the mold wear is lower than that of aluminum.
Good cutting performance: Magnesium has better cutting properties than aluminum and zinc. It can withstand higher cutting speeds, which can reduce the cutting processing time, extend the service life of the cutting tool, have excellent surface finish, and can be cut in one operation with almost no chipping. It has good chip-breaking characteristics and heat conductivity, and can avoid the use of coolant or lubricant.
