ASTM B637 UNS N07718 alloy high temperature resistant bar
ASTM B637 defines Inconel 718 bar (UNS N07718) as a high-strength, corrosion-resistant nickel-chromium alloy bar suitable for high-temperature applications such as gas turbine components, jet engine parts, and rocket engines. Due to its enrichment with niobium and molybdenum, the alloy exhibits uniquely high tensile and creep-rupture strengths at temperatures up to approximately 1300°F (700°C), enabling precipitation hardening. The alloy is also extremely weldable and maintains its strength and properties over a wide temperature range, from cryogenic to elevated temperatures.

Heat Treatment:
In most applications, Inconel 718 heat-resistant alloy rod is specified as solution annealed and precipitation hardened (precipitation hardening, age hardening, and precipitation heat treatment are synonymous).
Inconel 718 heat-resistant alloy rod is hardened by the precipitation of secondary phases (such as γ' and γ' duplex) within the metal matrix.
The precipitation of these nickel (aluminum, titanium, niobium) phases is induced by heat treatment in the temperature range of 1100 to 1500°F (750 to 850°C). For this metallurgical reaction to proceed properly, the aging constituents (aluminum, titanium, and niobium) must be in solution (dissolved in the matrix); if they precipitate as other phases or are otherwise combined, they will not precipitate properly, and the alloy's full strength will not be achieved.
Corrosion Resistance:
Inconel 718 heat-resistant alloy rod exhibits excellent corrosion resistance in a wide range of media. This corrosion resistance is similar to that of other nickel-chromium alloys and is determined by their composition. Nickel contributes to its corrosion resistance in a wide range of inorganic and organic compounds (except for strongly oxidizing compounds) and across a wide pH range.
It also helps prevent chloride-ion stress corrosion cracking. Chromium imparts resistance to attack by oxidizing media and sulfur-containing compounds. Molybdenum is believed to contribute to its resistance to pitting corrosion in a wide range of media.
