The wrinkle finish on pre-painted aluminum-zinc alloy coated steel (GL/AZ) is a textured coating effect achieved through formulation and process control. The coating is typically a high-solids polyester or polyurethane resin system incorporating thixotropic agents (e.g., fumed silica, organic waxes) and, in some cases, a wrinkling catalyst (like acid catalysts in certain systems). During curing, these additives cause differential surface tension and shrinkage, leading to the formation of a uniform, non-directional wrinkled pattern. The key process parameters are the coating viscosity, film thickness (usually 25–40 μm dry), and the curing profile. A critical factor is the “gel time” – the period during baking when the coating transitions from liquid to gel state. A rapid gel time, often induced by a lower initial oven temperature zone followed by a higher temperature peak, promotes wrinkle formation. The resulting texture depth typically ranges from 30 to 80 μm. This surface offers functional benefits: it effectively masks minor substrate imperfections and handling scratches, provides a consistent matte appearance with reduced light reflection (gloss < 10 GU at 60° is common), and can improve grip. The wrinkled structure also increases the surface area and mechanical interlocking, which can enhance resistance to abrasion. Substrate is typically GL/AZ (e.g., AZ150) for superior cut-edge corrosion protection. The coating must maintain flexibility to pass forming tests like the T-bend test (≤2T for most appliance applications). Wrinkle finishes are popular for appliance components, electrical enclosures, and architectural elements where a uniform, non-reflective, and fingerprint-concealing surface is desired.
