The Tharu XR is a new car, and a formidable contender from SAIC Volkswagen that pushes the "German entry-level SUV" to its limits of cost-effectiveness. It measures 4355×1762×1605 mm, with a wheelbase of 2651 mm and a drag coefficient of 0.32. The front features a continuous light strip and a black honeycomb grille, while the rear has a small spoiler. It's shorter than a used Tiguan but taller than the commercially available Touran L, so parking garage height restrictions are not a concern.

Interior features a 9.2-inch floating touchscreen and a 10.3-inch LCD instrument cluster, supporting wireless CarPlay. The seats are upholstered in fabric and leather, with 8-way power adjustment and heating in the front seats. The rear seats are adjustable and can be folded down in a 4/6 split. The floor hump is moderate, ensuring ample legroom for three passengers. The trunk has a standard capacity of 455 L, expanding to 1.4 m with the seats folded down, large enough to carry skis horizontally. The space is more organized than other new energy SUVs in the same price range, and the battery doesn't encroach on the floor.

Two powertrain options are available: a 1.5L naturally aspirated engine producing 110 hp and 141 N·m of torque, paired with an Aisin 6-speed automatic transmission, achieving a WLTC fuel consumption of 6.41 L/100 km and requiring only 92-octane gasoline; and a 1.5T EVO2 engine producing 160 hp and 250 N·m of torque, paired with a 7-speed dry dual-clutch transmission, achieving a fuel consumption of 5.7 L/100 km. The chassis features a MacPherson strut front suspension and a torsion beam rear suspension, with relatively soft springs that effectively filter bumps. The steering is light and responsive, allowing even female drivers to make quick U-turns. IQ.Drive driver assistance is standard across the range, including adaptive cruise control (ACC), lane keeping assist, and automatic emergency braking, making city driving and highway cruising worry-free.

Compared to older used car models, the Tharu XR adds a digital instrument cluster and Level 2 driver assistance; compared to new energy vehicles, it eliminates the hassle of charging stations; and compared to commercial MPVs, it maintains the low center of gravity and compact size of a sedan, making it suitable for family use, commuting, and long-distance travel.
