Zirconia ceramic plungers(Ziconia Plunger) & Alumina Ceramic are widely used in medical devices, environmental engineering, petroleum, chemical industries, etc., to solve the problems of short equipment lifespan caused by poor corrosion resistance and low working temperature of metal plungers. Taking the technical transformation of the metering pump plug as an example, the use of ceramic plungers helps to improve the durability of the equipment.
With the advancement of manufacturing technology, ceramic pump plungers made of high-performance ceramic materials such as silicon nitride are increasingly widely used, and the trend of domestic substitution is emerging.
A typical structure of a pump-use ceramic plunger is as follows: the inner part of the plunger body is a core made of metal material, and the outer part is covered with a shell made of ceramic material; a sealing rubber layer is set at the contact surface between the core and the shell; a plug is set at the end of the plunger body. This structure uses ceramic to cover the metal core, which not only enhances wear resistance and corrosion resistance, but also increases the overall strength through the plug, making the connection more compact.
The common high-performance engineering ceramic materials used to manufacture the shells of ceramic plungers mainly include alumina, zirconia, silicon nitride, silicon carbide, etc. Taking zirconia ceramic as an example, its typical performance parameters include: a density of approximately 6.0 g/cm³, an anti-bending strength of up to 800 MPa, an anti-compressive strength of up to 2000 MPa, and a thermal expansion coefficient of approximately 9.6 × 10⁻⁶/°C.
The working surface of the ceramic plunger can be formed with a micro-porous structure through special processing methods, thereby having self-lubrication properties, which changes the traditional sliding friction and lubrication mechanism. The inner surface of the cavity is usually designed with a fluid structure and processed to a mirror surface by high-precision internal and external cylindrical grinding machines, and the outer surface is subjected to vibration polishing to achieve no dead corners, facilitating cleaning and disinfection [1].
In high-pressure ceramic plunger pumps, a valve-matching oil structure is often adopted. The key components of the pump include the plunger, cylinder body, eccentric shaft, reset spring, etc. During operation, under the rotation of the eccentric shaft and the action of the reset spring, the sealed volume formed by the plunger and the cylinder body undergoes periodic changes, thereby achieving oil suction and oil discharge. Plunger fracture is one of the common faults of this type of pump, and cracks or fractures often occur in the neck of the plunger, usually caused by excessive clearance between the plunger and the cylinder body or excessive deviation of the force-bearing part of the plunger head from the axis, resulting in stress concentration
