High-speed box sealing adhesive for laminated cartons

The packaging industry's shift toward premium printed and film-laminated cartons has created a persistent challenge for adhesive engineers: conventional hot melts designed for bare kraft board simply do not bond reliably to smooth, low-energy laminated surfaces. TONGDE 8078 is a hot melt adhesive for laminated carton sealing specifically formulated to solve this problem—delivering consistent, strong bonds on BOPP, PET, and matte film laminates as well as UV-varnished and gloss-coated carton surfaces.

The Laminated Carton Challenge

Lamination protects and beautifies packaging, but it also creates a barrier between the adhesive and the paper fibers underneath. Where a standard hot melt can penetrate porous kraft board and form a mechanical anchor, the same adhesive applied to a BOPP or PET film surface can only form a surface-level adhesive bond. Application Tips for Laminated Surfaces

1. Increase compression time: On film-laminated cartons, maintain flap compression for 1.5–2.5 seconds (vs. 0.5–1.0 second on plain kraft) to allow the adhesive to wet the smooth surface fully.
2. Apply slightly thicker beads: A 0.4–0.6 mm glue line provides more material for surface interaction compared to the 0.2–0.3 mm typically sufficient on porous board.
3. Ensure surface cleanliness: Dust, release agents, and anti-static coatings on laminated films can interfere with adhesion. Clean surfaces or test bond strength before full production runs.
4. Optimize temperature: Start at 160°C for laminated substrates. If stringing occurs, increase to 170°C. If the laminate shows heat marks, reduce to 150°C.
