Rotary Relief Valve (also known as swing relief valve) is a cartridge pressure safety component installed on the swing motor of Caterpillar E320, E330, E320B, E330B medium & large crawler excavators.
It independently limits the maximum working pressure of left and right swing hydraulic circuits. When slewing starts, stops or hits obstacles, instant pressure surges will open the relief valve to release excess pressure oil. It provides buffer and shock absorption, protects swing motor, swing gearbox, pipelines and structural parts from impact overload damage. 3. Working Principle
Under normal swing operation, spring presses the spool against valve seat, and overflow channel stays closed.
When the swing platform rotates and encounters resistance or sudden braking, hydraulic pressure inside swing circuit exceeds preset value. Hydraulic force overcomes spring force to lift the spool, high-pressure oil overflows to low-pressure chamber of swing motor to absorb impact.
When pressure falls below setting value, spring resets the spool and closes overflow passage. The built-in makeup check valve supplements hydraulic oil to prevent vacuum cavitation inside swing motor, avoiding wear caused by lack of lubrication.
