Base glue, also known as primer or undercoating, is an essential pre-treatment material applied to the road surface before hot-melt road marking. It acts as the bonding bridge between the marking coating and the pavement. The organic solvents in the primer quickly wet the microscopic pores of the road surface, allowing the hot-melt paint to spread evenly. The resin component forms a dense, continuous film that anchors the molten marking paint during high-temperature application. Together, they dramatically improve adhesion between the marking and the road, preventing peeling, cracking, and exposure of the base — and extending service life. On cement (concrete) pavements, this step is mandatory: cement is hydrophilic, repels oil-based resins, and is rigid with minimal deformation, while hot-melt paint is thermoplastic and brittle in cold weather.
