2. OXIDATION

●SURFACE PREPARATION

The oxidizing power of persulfates is used for cleaning and microectching. A variety of printed circuit board substrates. Persulfates are important as oxidants in plating and coating processes. They are etchants for nickel, titanium, and zinc alloys. In semiconductor manufacturing, ammonium persulfate is used to remove photoresists. Persulfates are used to clean and mill aluminum brass, copper, and many other metal surfaces prior to plating or adhesive bonding.

●COSMETICS

The cosmetics industry has developed products which utilize persulfates as boosters in hair bleaching formulations.

●ORGANIC SYNTHESIS

Persulfates are oxidizing agents in the preparation of aldehydes, ketones, carboxylic acids, quinones and a variety of other compounds. The pharmaceutics industry has developed methods using sodium persulfate as a reagent in the preparation of antibiotics.

Persulfates are used in the sizing of paper/preparation of binders and coatings and production of special papers.

Ammonium and sodium pesulfates are used in the desizing and bleaching of textiles and the development of dyestuff.

In enhanced oil recovery, persulfates are used "down hole" for gel forming and breaking.

Persulfates are used to graft substractes to polymers (for example, carbon black to sodium acrylate, In dispersions, persulfates can be used to help bond coatings such as carbon black to polymer materials.) Persulfates are used in the preparation of dispersants (used as a free radical initiator in the manufacturing of dispensants. Dispensants used to stablilize collodial particle suspension) for ink jetting and toner formulations (Persulfate is used in the manufacture of ink for ink jet cartridges and Copier toner.)
