Dry granulator and dry granulation:

Granulation is a process of making powder particles adhere to each other, thereby forming larger multi particle entities, known as particles. If this process is carried out without adding liquid, it is called dry granulation. And the machine that used for dry granulation is roller compactor, also called dry granulator.

In dry granulation, compacting the powder mixture by applying force on the powder often results in significant size increase. The obtained block is called a strip, sheet, or lump. In order to obtain the desired particles, the compaction process is followed by a grinding step.

In the pharmaceutical production process, dry granulation is the most lean method for adjusting powders. Because this is a continuous manufacturing process, there is no need to build batches to meet equipment limitations. Due to the limited number of process variables, validation, optimization, and extension are relatively simple.

Compared to the commonly used wet granulation method, it is a more economical powder granulation method and more suitable for compounds that are sensitive to heat or moisture. Compared to direct compression, it eliminates the issues of mixture separation and flowability that may cause defective tablets.

BOLE rollers typically consist of three main units:

1. A feeding system that delivers powder to the compaction area between rollers

2. A compaction unit in which powder is compacted between two counter rotating rollers by applying force to form a belt or sheet. A size reduction unit used to grind the belt into particles of the desired size

3. A size reduction device for grinding strip into particles of the desired size
