Product details
PVC sheet is a material characterised by excellent flame retardancy and chemical stability; it also exhibits low internal tensile stress. Not only does PVC sheet possess high strength, but it also performs well in terms of rigidity and hardness. PVC sheet can be used at operating temperatures ranging from -15°C to 69°C and offers excellent workability, being suitable for both welding and adhesive bonding.

Based on hardness, they can be classified as soft PVC and hard PVC; based on manufacturing process, they can be classified as PVC skinned foam sheets and PVC free-foam sheets; and based on transparency, they can be classified as transparent PVC sheets and opaque PVC sheets.

Properties of PVC sheets:

1. High corrosion resistance: particularly suitable for the manufacture of corrosion-resistant equipment in the chemical industry;

2. Easy to process: it has good plasticity, allowing the desired results to be achieved with ease, whether cutting, welding or bending;

3. Excellent properties, including high strength, high rigidity and high hardness;

4. Good electrical insulation, making it suitable for use in insulating products;

5. Excellent chemical stability and self-extinguishing properties; 6. Low water absorption, easy to bond and paint.

So, what is the difference between high-quality and low-quality PVC?

1. Poor-quality PVC sheets have a loose texture, are relatively soft, and have an uneven surface; some even have bubble-like patterns on the cut edges, and powder may flake off when the cut surface is rubbed.

2. For the same thickness, high-quality PVC sheets have a higher density, a harder surface and are less prone to bending.

So how do you determine the density of PVC material?

The simplest method is to weigh the finished product made from the PVC pellets, then measure its volume using a measuring cylinder or similar tool; by dividing the mass by the volume, you can easily calculate the density of that batch of pellets.

For a reasonably accurate measurement, a specialised density meter is required. The granules should be compressed into sheets, cut to the specified dimensions, and placed in the density meter; by following the testing procedure, the density of the PVC material can be determined with reasonable accuracy.

What are the advantages and disadvantages of PVC panels?

1. Advantages: This material is lightweight, waterproof, moisture-resistant and resistant to insect damage. It is also easy to install and affordable. Furthermore, when flame-retardant additives are incorporated, tests have shown that it self-extinguishes upon removal from the flame, making it safer to use.

2. Disadvantages: PVC is not particularly stable; over time, it is prone to warping and ageing, resulting in a relatively short lifespan. Generally, it begins to look worn after 3–5 years. Furthermore, it is not environmentally friendly, as discarded PVC panels are difficult to dispose of and can easily cause environmental pollution. If inferior-quality PVC panels are purchased, they may also pose health risks.

How to Choose PVC Panels

1. When purchasing PVC panels, first check that the surface is attractive and smooth, and that the colours and patterns complement the area to be decorated.

2. The cross-section of click-fit panels typically features a honeycomb core with tongue and groove joints machined into both sides. When purchasing, ensure that the tongue and groove are straight and intact, that they fit together smoothly, and that there are no unevenness or height differences in any areas.

3. Bend the PVC sheet by hand to assess its flexibility and elasticity. If tapping the surface produces a crisp sound, this indicates high toughness, meaning the sheet will not dent or deform when subjected to moderate pressure.

4. High-quality PVC offers excellent flame-retardant properties and self-extinguishes upon removal from the flame.

5. Weather resistance. High-quality PVC does not yellow with prolonged use (white PVC) and does not fade (coloured PVC).

In addition, high-quality PVC sheets are easy to cut and produce clean, burr-free edges when engraved.

A Comprehensive Comparison of the Three Major Plastic Sheets: Acrylic, PC and PVC

Acrylic, PC and PVC are three common types of plastic sheet material. Through post-processing, they can be transformed into exquisite finished products. So, what are the differences between them? Let’s take a look~~

1. Transparency and Aesthetics

· Acrylic: Chemically known as polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA), commonly referred to as ‘organic glass’, it offers the highest transparency (over 92%) and is often called ‘plastic crystal’. It boasts excellent lustre and visual clarity, making it ideal for display items where appearance is paramount.

· PC: Known in Chinese as polycarbonate, it is often referred to as ‘Endurance Board’ or ‘bulletproof glass’. It offers high transparency (87%–91%), comparable to glass, and can meet most transparency requirements.

 · PVC: Known in Chinese as polyvinyl chloride. It has relatively average transparency and is usually slightly yellowish and translucent.

2. Impact resistance (resistance to drops and collisions)

· PC: Extremely high impact resistance—the highest of the three—and is often referred to as ‘transparent metal’. It does not break easily even when struck with a hammer and is commonly used in bulletproof glass, protective visors and similar applications.

· Acrylic: Has better impact resistance than glass, but is far inferior to PC; it may crack when subjected to strong impacts.

· PVC: Has poor impact resistance and is relatively brittle.

3. Flame Retardancy

· PVC and PC: Both possess good flame retardancy and will self-extinguish once removed from the source of ignition.

· Acrylic: Flammable; produces flames when burning.

4. Machinability  In terms of machinability, all three are easy to drill, bond, bend and cut. Acrylic is particularly suited to bonding and bending processes, allowing for virtually seamless results, making it ideal for complex shapes.

5. Choosing the right material for different applications ‌

Acrylic‌: Suitable for applications where appearance, transparency and outdoor durability are key. Examples include: high-end signage, light boxes, display stands, outdoor billboards (requiring long-term resistance to yellowing), picture frames, decorative items and products with complex shapes.‌

PC‌: Suitable for applications requiring high levels of safety, impact resistance and heat resistance. For example: safety goggles, blast-proof windows, protective covers for machinery, outdoor canopies, conservatories, facilities in high-traffic public areas, and structures subject to significant external forces.

PVC: Suitable for applications requiring flame retardancy and corrosion resistance where budgets are limited. For example: electrical distribution box panels, indoor advertising display boards, backing panels for signage, chemical-resistant liners, and certain short-term applications where transparency is not a key requirement.

In summary, acrylic is renowned for its high transparency and weather resistance, PC stands out for its exceptional strength and heat resistance, whilst PVC offers the advantages of flame retardancy, chemical resistance and low cost. When making a selection, the key requirements of the specific application should be the primary consideration.
