What challenges will engine valves encounter in extreme environments, and what common malfunction problems may occur?

▶ When the engine is working, the valve is in a harsh environment:

1. High temperature: The temperature of the intake valve can reach 200-300℃, and the exhaust valve, due to direct contact with high-temperature exhaust gas, has a temperature as high as 600-800℃ (close to half of the melting point of metals). Therefore, high-temperature resistant materials (such as nickel-based alloys and sodium-cooled valves) must be used.

2. High-frequency impact: Taking an engine at 4,000 revolutions per minute as an example, each valve needs to open and close 2,000 times per minute, which is equivalent to 33 times per second. Long-term high-frequency vibration is prone to cause fatigue fracture, so the valve stem part needs to undergo strengthening treatment (such as carburizing and quenching).

3. Lubrication challenge: The lubrication between the valve and the valve guide relies on engine oil. However, the lubrication conditions at the top of the cylinder are poor, making it prone to wear. Therefore, copper-based alloys with good self-lubricating properties are commonly used as guide materials, or "hollow valve stems" are adopted to reduce weight and inertial force.

▶ If the valve fails, it will directly affect the engine operation:

1. Carbon deposits on the valves: Impurities in the fuel and combustion residues can form carbon deposits on the valve surface, causing the valves to not close tightly and increasing intake resistance. This is manifested as idle vibration, weak acceleration, and increased fuel consumption.

2. Valve wear or breakage: In severe cases, it can cause the valve to fall into the cylinder and collide with the piston, resulting in a "cylinder ejection" accident, with extremely high maintenance costs (possibly requiring a major engine overhaul).

3. Incorrect valve timing: Belt/chain tooth skipping, malfunction of variable timing mechanism, etc., can cause confusion in intake and exhaust timing, resulting in "backfire" (mixture explosion when the intake valve is not closed) or "blowout" (exhaust gas combustion when the exhaust valve is not closed), damaging engine components.
