1. Does the Glassboy 8D need a crane or hoist at the work position?

It needs something above it to hang from — an overhead crane, a jib crane, or a hoist on a monorail. The Glassboy series has no wheels, no travel drive and no lifting structure of its own, so it cannot raise a panel from the ground. If there is nothing to hang it from at the work position, or you need the machine to reach 4m or 5m on its own, this is not the right model. Send us the working height and the position layout and we will tell you which self-supporting glass vacuum lifter fits, or whether an overhead crane is the more economical route at your volume.

2. Is 650kg enough, and what size of glass can it hold?

The rated maximum load capacity is 650kg carried on eight Dia.290mm round suction cups, and it is the highest rating in the Glassboy range. Glass weight varies with thickness and size, so the rating alone does not tell you which panel dimensions will lift. Send us the panel thickness and the width and height of your largest unit and we will confirm from the cup layout what is safe, and tell you if your panel falls outside what eight Dia.290mm cups can cover. If your panels are heavier than 650kg in total, or you need to reach a much greater height, tell us before ordering — that is a different machine class.

3. Is the 6D the 8D with two suction cups taken off? How does the cup count affect the rating?

The Glassboy range is built as a combinable cup frame, and the 4D, 6D and 8D are the three rated configurations of it: four cups at 350kg, six cups at 500kg, eight cups at 650kg. Each of those ratings is set by the steel structure — the frame, the arms and the joints — and the cups sit on that structure to grip the panel, they do not set the number. The cups decide how the panel is held; the structural rating decides how much the machine is allowed to carry, and the two are not the same thing. So we quote three machines, each rated as supplied, and we do not quote the 8D as a downrated 6D. If you need less capacity on a narrower footprint, order the 6D or 4D as its own rated machine.

4. My load falls between two models — what happens then?

If your requirement falls between two of the standard ratings — for example 450kg, which is above the 4D at 350kg and below the 6D at 500kg — tell us and we will check whether the steel structure of the larger frame is rated for that load, rather than working it out from the cup count. The cup number tells us how the panel is gripped; the structural rating is what decides the load, and the two are not the same thing. Send us the panel thickness and dimensions and we will confirm from the structure, and tell you plainly if we cannot warrant it.

Same frame family, same manual 360° rotation and 0°-90° tilt, same DC12V-15Ah battery, same dual vacuum circuit option, same IP43 control box. The differences are the cup count, the rated capacity and the self weight. The 4D is four cups at 350kg at 55kg. The 6D is six cups at 500kg at 65kg. The 8D is eight cups at 650kg at 75kg. If you handle one very heavy panel or a small batch at a time, the 8D is the one; if your panels are mid-range, the 6D is usually the better buy.

The Glassboy range runs on a DC12V-15Ah battery with intelligent vacuum compensation. The working time is not listed in our catalogue, so we will confirm the figure against your actual duty cycle rather than quote a number we have not measured. The machine uses most common hardware parts, so parts can be bought locally from a hardware or lifting equipment supplier rather than shipped from us, and if a machine does break down we guide the repair by video and repair instruction. One year quality guarantee including the battery; if it breaks down within one year we send the parts free of charge.
