High Frequency Transformer Construction

The construction of a high frequency transformer or high frequency transformer design needs to address additional design considerations arising due to parasitic effects at high frequencies:

1.Core Material: Ferrite cores are most commonly used due to their lower core losses at higher frequencies compared to silicon steel cores. Power ferrites with grains oriented in one direction have even lower losses.

2.Winding Configuration: Multilayer winding with single/double layer taping is used to minimize inter-layer and inter-turn capacitance. Thicker wire also helps reduce skin effect losses.

3.Winding Insulation: Additional insulation is needed between layers and turns to prevent turn-to-turn flashover at higher voltages. Air insulation or mylar tapes are used.

4.Leakage Inductance: Careful winding and tight coupling are required to achieve leakages below 5% of primary inductance for stability. Gapped/toroidal cores also help.
