What is shikonin?

Shikonin is a red naphthoquinone compound derived from the roots of the plant Lithospermum erythrorhizon, also known as red gromwell. The Shikonin plant of antibacterial ingredients has been used in traditional Chinese medicine for centuries for its various medicinal properties, including antibacterial and anti-inflammatory effects.

Specifically, it can inhibit Complex II (CII) of the ETC, reducing ATP production. Shikonin can disrupt the mitochondrial membrane potential and induce reactive oxygen species (ROS) generation, leading to mitochondrial dysfunction and potential apoptosis.
