Hairyvein Agrimony (Agrimonia pilosa), Xian He Cao

Overview:
Xian He Cao, commonly known as Hairyvein Agrimony, is a traditional Chinese medicinal herb derived from the whole dried plant of Agrimonia pilosa. Widely used in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), it is valued for its astringent, hemostatic, and anti-inflammatory properties. It is especially useful for stopping bleeding, treating diarrhea, and addressing conditions caused by deficiency or damp-heat.

Botanical Characteristics:
Agrimonia pilosa is a perennial herb that grows in temperate regions of East Asia. It features hairy stems, serrated compound leaves, and small yellow flowers that bloom in summer. The entire plant is harvested, usually in summer or autumn, then dried for medicinal use.

Traditional Uses in TCM:

• Stops bleeding: Used to treat various types of internal and external bleeding, including nosebleeds, vomiting blood, uterine bleeding, and bloody stools.

• Astringes intestines and stops diarrhea: Effective for chronic diarrhea, dysentery, and intestinal disorders.

• Kills parasites: Sometimes used to treat malaria, intestinal worms, and vaginal itching.

• Promotes wound healing: Applied topically for traumatic injuries, ulcers, or skin infections.

Pharmacological Properties:
Modern studies have shown that Xian He Cao contains flavonoids, tannins, and volatile oils, which contribute to its anti-inflammatory, antibacterial, antioxidant, and hemostatic effects. Its astringent nature helps contract tissues and reduce secretions.

Preparation and Dosage:
Typically used in decoctions, powdered form, or in herbal formulas. The general dosage for decoction is 9–15 grams, depending on the condition and the individual's constitution. For external use, the powdered herb may be applied directly to wounds or mixed with other herbs.

Precautions:

• Should be used with caution in cases of yin deficiency with heat, as its astringent nature may exacerbate the imbalance.

• Not recommended for individuals with severe dryness or constipation.
