Chemical and Environmental Resistance
One of PP sheet' s most defining characteristics is its extraordinary chemical resistance. The polymer' s hydrocarbon backbone renders it inert to a wide spectrum of chemicals, including acids, bases, alcohols, aldehydes, and petroleum-based solvents. This resistance stems from the methyl side groups, which create a dense molecular structure that resists penetration by polar molecules and chemical agents. As a result, PP is widely employed in chemical processing equipment, such as tanks, pipelines, and valves, where exposure to corrosive substances is inevitable. However, its resistance to oxidizing agents and strong polar solvents—such as acetone or concentrated sulfuric acid—remains limited, necessitating the use of specialized grades or coatings in such environments.
PP sheets' s environmental stability is another critical advantage. Its resistance to moisture absorption—typically less than 0.02% by weight—ensures dimensional stability and mechanical performance in humid or wet conditions, distinguishing it from hydrophilic polymers like nylon or polycarbonate. Moreover, PP is inherently resistant to UV radiation and weathering when stabilized with additives, making it suitable for outdoor applications such as furniture, signage, and agricultural films. Nevertheless, prolonged exposure to UV radiation without stabilizers can lead to surface degradation, reduced mechanical strength, and a yellowish discoloration, highlighting the importance of incorporating UV stabilizers in exterior-grade PP formulations.
