Atractylodes Rhizome (Cang Zhu, Atractylodes lancea)

Overview:
Cang Zhu, or Atractylodes Rhizome, is the dried rhizome of Atractylodes lancea or related species. It is one of the most important herbs in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) for drying dampness, strengthening the spleen, and expelling wind-dampness. With its warm and aromatic nature, it is commonly used to treat digestive disorders and damp-related conditions, especially in the lower body.

Botanical Characteristics:
Atractylodes lancea is a perennial herb native to China and parts of East Asia. The rhizome is harvested in autumn, then sliced and dried. Its aroma is earthy and spicy, indicative of its powerful damp-drying action.

Traditional Uses in TCM:

  • Dries dampness and strengthens the spleen:
Commonly used for poor appetite, abdominal fullness, loose stools, and fatigue caused by damp obstruction in the digestive system.

  • Dispels wind-dampness:
Used to relieve arthritic pain, swollen joints, and stiffness due to wind-damp invasion, particularly in the lower limbs.

  • Induces sweating and releases the exterior:
Sometimes used for early-stage wind-cold with dampness symptoms like chills, fever, headache, and body aches.

  • Improves vision:
Traditionally thought to benefit the eyes, especially in cases of night blindness related to dampness and spleen deficiency.

  • In cases of exterior conditions, it may be combined with wind-dispersing herbs like Qiang Huo or Jing Jie.
