Ban Xia (Pinellia) – Pinellia ternata Tuber

Overview:
Ban Xia is the tuber of the Pinellia ternata plant, a traditional herb widely used in Chinese medicine. It is well known for its ability to dry dampness, transform phlegm, stop nausea, and calm the stomach. Because raw Ban Xia is toxic, it must be properly processed before use to ensure safety.

Botanical Description:
Pinellia ternata is a small, perennial herb belonging to the Araceae family. It has heart-shaped leaves and produces a small flower spike (spadix). The part used in medicine is the underground tuber, which is harvested in the summer and dried after processing.

Traditional Uses in TCM:

• Resolves phlegm:
  Used to treat cough with thick mucus, chest tightness, or a feeling of fullness due to dampness in the body.

• Stops nausea and vomiting:
  Helpful for nausea caused by various conditions, including morning sickness, stomach upset, or motion sickness.

• Calms the stomach:
  Used to treat poor appetite, bloating, and indigestion caused by cold and dampness.

• Reduces nodules:
  In some cases, used to soften swellings or lumps caused by phlegm accumulation.

Modern Research:
Studies have shown that processed Ban Xia has anti-inflammatory, antiemetic (prevents vomiting), and expectorant properties. Its active components include organic acids, alkaloids, and other compounds that support its traditional uses.

Preparation and Dosage:

• Dosage: Usually 3–9 grams per day in decoctions or formulas.

• Processing: Typically soaked or cooked with ginger juice and lime to remove toxicity before use.

Safety Notes:

• Raw Ban Xia is toxic and should never be taken unprocessed.

• Not suitable for people with dry cough, yin deficiency, or during pregnancy.
