A 1.5-meter cable is ideal for personal use, as it connects a handheld diagnostic tool to the OBD port (usually located under the dashboard) without excess slack, reducing tripping hazards and clutter. Professional mechanics often prefer 2.5 to 3-meter cables, allowing them to operate diagnostic laptops placed on workbenches or vehicle seats while maintaining a stable connection. Longer cables (4-5 meters) exist for specialized scenarios, such as heavy-duty trucks where the OBD port may be positioned further from the operator’s workspace, but these require shielded wiring to mitigate signal degradation caused by electromagnetic interference (EMI) from the vehicle’s electrical system.
