The steel coil ground logistics transportation system is the core part of the internal logistics and steel processing distribution center in steel enterprises. Due to the characteristics of steel coils, such as heavy weight (single coil can reach 20-30 tons), easy rolling shape, and high value, the ground transportation system of steel coils has extremely high requirements for safety, efficiency, and surface protection in design and management.

The key elements of a complete set of steel coils ground logistics system
1. Transport vehicle
Intra-factory cross-area transportation (trackless type): 
-Steel coil transportation vehicle (CBT, Coil Blast Truck): Also known as unmanned steel coil transfer vehicle or intelligent on-board platform vehicle. This is the mainstream configuration for large steel mills (such as Baowu, Thyssen, etc.). It usually adopts hydraulic saddle seats and V-shaped brackets, and can automatically travel along pre-installed magnetic nails or laser navigation paths to achieve unmanned transfer from the hot rolling plant to the cold rolling plant or to the steel coil warehouse. 
-Heavy-duty tractor + flatbed trailer: Suitable for medium to long-distance transportation with non-fixed routes, highly flexible, but dependent on the driver's operational experience.
Internal short transfer and storage (track type): 
-Over-crossing flatbed vehicle (electric track flatcar): Operates along the ground track, has strong carrying capacity (commonly ranging from 30 tons to 150 tons), and is mainly used for transferring between workshops (such as from the main rolling line to the finished product warehouse). 
-Stepping Beam/Chain Conveyor: A fixed equipment used for achieving stepwise transportation, weighing and bundling of steel coils within the production line (such as at the entrance and exit sections).
2. Loading and Unloading Equipment and Hoisting Tools
-C-shaped hook: This is the most commonly used method for lifting and transporting vehicles. The hook body is inserted into the inner hole of the steel coil, and self-locking is achieved by shifting the center of gravity. The key point is that the hook opening needs to be equipped with a copper pad or polyurethane protective layer to prevent scratches on the edge of the steel coil, which could result in waste. 
-Special fixtures (clamping devices/robot arms): Commonly used in highly automated vertical storage systems or unmanned conveyors. They securely hold the outer wall of the steel coil from both sides using hydraulic clamping arms, enabling damage-free picking and automatically detecting the coil diameter.
3. Key Safety and Protection Design
-V-shaped saddle: Whether for transport vehicles or warehouse stacking, V-shaped or concave saddles must be used. The steel coil is stabilized within the saddle through its own weight to prevent it from rolling off in case of sudden braking (the inertia of the steel coil is extremely high, and the consequences would be very serious if it were to roll). 
-Anti-fall binding: For road transportation or tractor-trailer transportation, in addition to V-shaped timber (usually hardwood or rubber), high-strength ratchet straps (at least 2-3 strands) must be used for cross-locking. It is strictly prohibited to directly tighten with steel wire ropes (which may damage the steel coils). 
-Inter-layer protection: When stacking or transporting multiple layers of steel coils, grass pads, rubber pads or paper pads should be placed between each layer to prevent scratches caused by direct contact.
4. The trend of intelligence (automation and digitization)
-Unmanned vehicle operation (automatic crane): Through laser scanning and three-dimensional positioning, it can automatically complete the storage, transfer and retrieval of steel coils, without the need for ground crane operators. 
-AGV (Automated Guided Vehicle) heavy-load application: For finished rolls such as cold-rolled and galvanized products, heavy-load AGVs with a load capacity of 20-40 tons have begun to replace traditional traction vehicles, enabling precise parking and automatic charging. 
-Steel coil ID identification: Install AI visual cameras at key nodes of the transportation route (such as inventory pickup, cross-track vehicle entry) to automatically read the labels or steel stamp numbers on the steel coils, achieving real-time synchronization of logistics information with the MES (Manufacturing Execution System), and avoiding incorrect dispatching and mixed coils.
