What is a substation transformer?

A substation transformer is a type of three-phase transformer engineered for integration into both large-scale transmission and smaller distribution power networks. These units are permanently installed on dedicated concrete pads, which are meticulously designed by power engineers during the initial project planning phase, for either indoor or outdoor environments.

Electrical connection is achieved via bushings, located either on the top or on the side of the transformer. These bushings facilitate the linking of high-voltage and low-voltage cables, channeling electrical current to adjacent substation equipment like switchgear and control panels within the operation room.

Typically configured as oil-immersed units, these transformers utilize dielectric fluids such as conventional mineral oil, environmentally friendly vegetable-based oil (like FR3), or silicone oil. They are manufactured in compliance with international standards like IEC or IEEE and find extensive application across utility and industrial sectors. Regarding electrical ratings, the primary voltage generally ranges from a minimum of 2.4 kV up to 69 kV (based on IEEE standards), with power capacities spanning from 150 kVA to 20 MVA. The secondary output voltage typically falls between 0.6 kV and 35 kV.
