Introduction
Grey iron is the volume market. It does not need ultra-low sulphur, it does not need the highest carbon on the certificate, and it does not reward a buyer who pays for purity the casting will never use. What it does need is a carbon source that behaves the same way every day, at a cost that leaves margin in a thin-margin product.
What it is
A granular graphitized carburizer for grey iron practice: fast enough to dissolve in an induction furnace, clean enough to avoid porosity, and specified to the tolerance grey iron actually requires rather than to a specification borrowed from ductile iron.
Key specifications
- Fixed carbon: 98% min
- Sulphur and nitrogen: standard grade, suitable for grey iron
- Particle size: granular cut matched to furnace size
- Packing: 25 kg bags, 1,000 kg bulk bags
- Application: grey iron, and general foundry work outside critical ductile heats
Where it fits
- Machine tool, pump and valve castings in grey iron
- Jobbing foundries running several grades on one furnace
- Shops where carbon is added routinely rather than as an exception
- Plants that want one economical grade for the bulk of production
How to use it
Charge with the scrap at the bottom of the furnace and bury it. Stir or let induction circulation work, then check carbon before tapping. For grey iron a small sulphur content is not a defect - in fact some sulphur supports flake graphite growth, so do not chase ultra-low sulphur unless your specification asks for it.
What it changes in your melt
A predictable carbon rise for a lower cost per tonne, with ash low enough that slag volume stays manageable. For most grey iron shops the gain is not in metallurgy but in the monthly cost line, without a corresponding rise in rejects.
Why source it from Wanyue
We keep this grade in stock for routine grey iron production and ship it alongside higher-specification grades when a customer runs both. Ports: Tianjin, Shanghai, Lianyungang.
FAQ
Q: Is this the same product as your ductile iron grade?
A: Same graphite base, different specification. The ductile grade is held to tighter sulphur and nitrogen limits.
Q: Can we use it for a ductile iron heat in an emergency?
A: Not recommended - the sulphur level may consume magnesium.
