10HP screw air compressor with air receiver tank

Compressed air rarely reaches a workshop as one decision. The compressor comes first, then a receiver to go with it, then the pipe and fittings to join the two, and by the time air arrives at the tools nobody is quite sure which part is undersized. This unit takes the second decision away. A 7.5 kW (10 HP) single stage rotary screw element sits on a 300 L horizontal receiver, direct drive, air cooled, set at 8 bar and delivering 1.2 m³/min, about 42 CFM. Cabinet and tank are one assembly, so the floor carries one footprint and the crane makes one lift.

Buying the pair as one air compressor and receiver changes what the tank is for. A receiver is not storage in the way a warehouse is storage. It is the buffer between a machine that makes air at a fixed rate and tools that take it in slugs. Open two impact wrenches together and the demand jumps well above anything the element can produce on its own. With stored volume in front of them the surge is paid out of the air receiver and the element never sees it, so it stays loaded for longer stretches and the pressure at the tool holds instead of sagging for a second or two.

At this size the machine it replaces is usually a piston unit, and the difference shows up across a working day rather than in a catalogue. A piston compressor is built to work and then rest, so a shop drawing air continuously either buys well above its nominal size or accepts that the unit will not keep up through a long shift. A 40 cfm air compressor on a screw element is built to run without that rest. Two rotors turn against each other in an oil film rather than a piston reciprocating in a bore, which leaves less to shake the floor and less to wear.

An air compressor for auto repair shop duty is the case this arrangement suits best. Impact wrenches, tyre inflation, blow guns and a touch-up gun all want air in bursts, none of them need it dried to instrument grade, and a service bay rarely has a plant room to put a machine in. Where a shop does need dry air, for a spray booth or a plasma table, the dryer belongs after the receiver rather than inside the cabinet, and that is the direction the air is already travelling. Adding a refrigerated dryer downstream is a purchase made when the job calls for it, not one paid for on day one.

What the machine deliberately does not carry is a dryer, and leaving it out is part of the specification. A cabinet with one inside also carries a refrigerant circuit, a condenser to keep clear and a drain trap that wants watching, and a workshop that already runs a dryer at the end of its line would be paying for a second one. Cooling here is by air alone, so there is no water connection to arrange and no drain to find on site. The element covers an ambient range of -5 to +45 °C, wide enough for an unheated bay in winter and a metal roofed shed in summer, and the supply is 380 V three phase 50 Hz as standard.

Sizing comes down to adding up what runs at once rather than what runs on average. A spray gun, two impact wrenches and a blow gun opening together are the case to check, and that total is what has to sit inside the 1.2 m³/min the unit holds at 8 bar. Servicing follows four items: the air filter, the oil, the oil filter and the separator, all reached from the front of the cabinet, with condensate drained from the receiver at intervals that depend on how much moisture the incoming air carries. Consumables come from the same service parts range as the rest of our machines. Other 10 HP builds, including the cabinet version without a receiver, sit under 10 HP screw compressors, and the builds that arrive with a dryer already joined to them are grouped under integrated air compressor.

Advantages

  • Compressor and receiver arrive as one assembly: the tank is not a second purchase, and the pipe between the two is not a job on your floor
  • The receiver pays out the short peaks, so a tool that opens suddenly does not pull the line pressure down with it
  • Direct drive and a single stage: no belt to tension, no gearbox, and nothing between the motor and the element
  • 1.2 m³/min at 8 bar, about 42 CFM, from a 7.5 kW motor: enough for a spray gun and a pair of impact wrenches running together
  • Air cooled, so no water line, no cooling tower and no drain to find on site
  • Ambient range of -5 to +45 °C, which covers an unheated bay in winter and a hot shed in summer
  • No dryer inside: nothing to refrigerate, no trap to watch, and one item fewer in the service list
  • The receiver doubles as the base, so the unit takes one floor area and one lift instead of two

Why Choose Us

  • The receiver and the element are a matched pair, worked out together before either is built, so there is no question of a tank that turns out to be too small for the machine sitting above it.
  • The air end comes off the same production as our standalone screw machines and is held to the same ISO 9001-2015 process, so the compressor on the tank is the machine you would otherwise buy on its own.
  • Voltage and frequency are built to your supply. 380 V three phase 50 Hz is the standard, and a custom voltage or a 60 Hz build is a normal order rather than a special one.
  • The set point is fixed at 8 bar before the machine leaves. A job that needs more or less pressure is built to that figure, so state it at the time of order.
  • One item to receive. Compressor and receiver ship bolted together, so there is nothing to lift into place separately and nothing to join once the unit lands.
  • The mass of the receiver sits under the cabinet rather than beside it, which gives the assembly a low centre and less movement to pass into the floor.

FAQ

Q1: What are the rated specifications of this unit?

Model SA-10A: a 7.5 kW (10 HP) single stage rotary screw compressor mounted on a 300 L horizontal air receiver, direct drive and air cooled. Working pressure is 8 bar, free air delivery is 1.2 m³/min (about 42 CFM), the ambient range is -5 to +45 °C, and the standard supply is 380 V three phase 50 Hz. Other voltages and 60 Hz are built to order.

Q2: What does the 300 L receiver actually do for me?

It holds air already compressed to 8 bar, so a tool that opens suddenly draws from the tank rather than straight off the element. That keeps the pressure at the tool from dipping when several tools run at once, and it lets the compressor stay loaded for longer stretches instead of switching on and off through the shift. Treat the volume as the buffer that covers the gap between what the element produces and what a tool takes in a burst.

Q3: Do I need a dryer with this machine?

Not for every job. Impact wrenches, tyre work and general blow-off do not need dried air. Painting, plasma cutting and breathing air do, and for those the dryer goes after the receiver, which is where the air is already heading. Refrigerated and desiccant dryers both come from the same range, so the machine can be bought now and the dryer added when a job calls for it.

Q4: Why choose a screw machine here rather than a piston one?

A piston compressor is designed to run and then cool, so a shop drawing air all day either oversizes it or lives with the interruption. A screw element runs continuously, and at 10 HP the difference across a working day matters more than the difference in the purchase price. There is also less vibration, because two rotors turning in an oil film do not shake a floor the way a reciprocating piston does.

Q5: What maintenance does the unit need?

Four items on a schedule: the air filter, the oil, the oil filter and the separator. All of them are reached from the front of the cabinet. Condensate has to be drained from the receiver at intervals that depend on how much moisture the incoming air carries. Service points and intervals are set out in the manual, and the intervals follow running hours and how clean the air is where the machine sits.

Q6: What does the site need to provide?

A level, solid floor that takes the weight of the assembly, and a little clearance at the front so the cabinet panel can open. Air cooling means a supply of moving air around the unit rather than a water connection. Power is a single three phase supply at 380 V 50 Hz, and the air leaves through one outlet.
