What is lactic acid?

Lactic acid, known as 2-hydroxypropionic acid, is a carboxylic acid. It is a colorless liquid at room temperature, odorless, and hygroscopic. Lactic acid molecules have one hydroxyl group and one carboxyl group and belong to the alpha hydroxy acid (AHA). Lactic acid can be obtained by fermentation and chemical synthesis. Lactic acid is produced in living organisms, especially when muscle cells undergo anaerobic respiration.

What does lactic acid do?

While it can build up in muscles during intense exercise, this buildup doesn't usually cause lasting harm. However, excessive lactic acid production or impaired removal can lead to a serious condition called lactic acidosis, which can be life-threatening.

How to stop lactic acid build up?

To reduce lactic acid buildup during exercise, prioritize proper form, gradually increase intensity, stay hydrated, and incorporate stretching and active recovery.
