The difference between common mode inductor and differential mode inductor

Two types of inductors used to resist electromagnetic interference: common mode inductors and differential mode inductors.

The disturbance electromagnetic field produces differential mode current between the line and the line, which causes interference on the load, which is differential mode interference. The disturbance electromagnetic field produces a common mode current between the line and the ground, and the common mode current produces a differential mode voltage on the load, causing interference, which is the common mode ground loop interference.

The filter inductor that suppresses common mode interference is called common mode inductor. The filter inductance to suppress differential mode interference is called differential mode inductance.

Common-mode inductors are two groups of coils with the same number of turns, the same wire diameter, and the opposite direction around the same core. A differential mode inductor is a coil wound around an iron core.

The characteristic of common mode inductors is that because the two groups of coils on the same core are wound in opposite directions, the core is not afraid of saturation. The most used magnetic core material on the market is the high conductivity ferrite material.

Differential mode inductors are characterized by their application in high current situations. Because of a coil around an iron core, when the current flowing into the coil increases, the core in the coil will be saturated, so the most used iron core material on the market is metal powder core material.
