Common mode choke coils

Common-mode inductors are inductance components that consist of two adjacent coils. When a signal passes through the two coils, a magnetic field is formed between them, resulting in an inductance effect. Common-mode inductors are often used in applications such as power supply filtering, EMI suppression, and signal isolation.

Unlike differential-mode inductors, common-mode inductors have two identical coils, so their inductance coefficients (L) are usually equal, which can eliminate voltage changes caused by external noise or interference.

Working principle:

It consists of two coils wound on a ferrite at the same time. The two coils have the same number of turns but are wound in opposite directions. When an interference signal (differential-mode signal) flows through the coil, the two magnetic fields E1 and E2 in opposite directions will cancel each other out; however, when a common-mode signal passes through, the magnetic flux in the magnetic ring is superimposed on each other, which is equivalent to a relatively large inductance. The coil presents a high impedance characteristic, which produces a strong damping effect to suppress the common-mode current. The final result is to suppress the common-mode signal without affecting the differential-mode signal.
