Common-mode inductance
Common-mode inductors, also called common-mode chokes, are common-mode interference suppression devices with ferrite or amorphous cores. It consists of two coils of the same size and number of turns symmetrically wound on the core, forming a four-port device. An ideal common-mode inductor only suppresses common-mode interference, and has no attenuation or suppression effect on differential-mode signals.
 
In fact, due to the incomplete symmetry of the coil winding, differential-mode leakage inductance will be generated, so that the common-mode inductor can have a certain suppression effect on differential-mode signals.
 
Since common-mode chokes can achieve very large common-mode inductance values ​​on very small cores, they are widely used in EMI filters. They play a very important role in suppressing conducted EMI noise. Common-mode inductors are widely used in common-mode interference suppression of switching power supply input L and N lines and high-speed differential signals.
