Leakage inductance and differential mode inductance For an ideal inductance model, all the flux is concentrated in the center of the coil when the coil is wound. But usually the annular coil will not be wrapped around a full week, or not tightly wound, which will cause leakage of magnetic flux.

A common-mode inductor has two windings with a considerable gap between them, which causes flux leakage and forms a differential mode inductor.

Because of this, common mode inductors generally have a certain difference mode interference attenuation ability. In the design of the filter, we can also use leakage sensing. For example, in an ordinary filter, only a common mode inductor is installed, and the leakage inductor of the common mode inductor is used to generate an appropriate amount of differential mode inductor to inhibit the differential mode current.

Sometimes, it is necessary to artificially increase the leakage inductance of the common mode choke and increase the differential mode inductance to achieve better filtering effect.
