Maltodextrin
Maltodextrin is a white powder made from corn, rice, potato starch, or wheat. Even though it comes from plants, it’s highly processed. The process of making it involves cooking the starches and then adding acids or enzymes, such as heat-stable bacterial alpha-amylase, to break it down further. The resulting white powder is water-soluble and has a neutral taste. The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has approved maltodextrin as a safe food additive. Maltodextrin is also included in the nutritional value of food as part of the total carbohydrate count.
Maltodextrin has a high glycemic index (GI) value, which means it can cause a spike in your blood sugar. It’s safe to consume in very small amounts, but people with diabetes should be particularly mindful of how much they consume.
Bailong is the leading production enterprise of Fructo-Oligosachharide Powder 95% (FOS), Isomalto-Oligosaccharide Powder (IMO), Xylo-Oligosaccharide Powder and syrup (XOS), Polydextrose Powder and syrup, Resistant Dextrin Powder and syrup, Allulose Crystal and syrup and Galacto-Oligosaccharide Powder and syrup (GOS) in China. Those products can replace sugar and be applied in healthy food, functional beverages, baby food etc.
Application of Maltodextrin
Maltodextrin is used in numerous food products to give some thickness and mouthfeel to the product and also, of course, to provide carbohydrates. Maltodextrin is commonly used in products like:
Infant formulas.
Oral rehydration solutions.
Drink mixes, soups, puddings, etc.
Sports products.
because it is extremely easy on the digestive system compared to other carbohydrate sources like glucose (dextrose), sucrose (cane sugar) and fructose (fruit sugar).
Who can benefit from Maltodextrin?
1. Exercise
Maltodextrin is a fast-digesting carbohydrate, it’s often included in sports drinks and snacks for athletes. For bodybuilders and other athletes trying to gain weight, maltodextrin can be a good source of quick calories during or after a workout. Since maltodextrin doesn’t require as much water to digest as some other carbohydrates, it’s a good way to get quick calories without becoming dehydrated.
2. Chronic hypoglycemia
Some people with chronic hypoglycemia (low blood sugar) take maltodextrin as part of their regular treatment. Because maltodextrin causes a fast increase in blood sugar, it’s an effective treatment for those who have difficulty maintaining adequate blood sugar levels.
3. Colorectal cancer
Maltodextrin’s fermentation in the intestines could act as an agent that helps prevent colorectal cancer.
