Optical properties
High transmittance and low haze
Transmittance: The transmittance of transparent PVC can reach 85% - 90%, which is close to PMMA and glass, meeting most scenarios with high transparency requirements;
Haze: By optimizing the type of plasticizer and processing technology, the haze can be reduced to 1% - 3%, significantly reducing light scattering and ensuring visual clarity.
Optical distortion control
Birefringence: By adding optical grade stabilizers and adjusting the orientation of molecular chains, the birefringence of transparent PVC is ≤0.002, which can effectively avoid image distortion caused by light refraction;
Surface flatness: Using precision calendering technology (thickness tolerance ±0.05 mm), the surface roughness Ra≤0.1 μm, reducing light diffuse reflection and improving light transmission uniformity.
Application scenarios: Transparent PVC is widely used in fields with strict requirements on optical performance, such as optical instrument windows, advertising light boxes, and display boxes.
Mechanical properties
High flexibility
Elongation at break: The elongation at break of transparent PVC can reach 200% - 400%, which is significantly better than PMMA and glass, and is suitable for scenes that require repeated bending;
Shore hardness: By adjusting the plasticizer content, the hardness can be adjusted in the range of Shore A50 - A90, meeting the diverse needs from soft (such as medical hoses) to hard (such as transparent panels).
Impact resistance
Notched impact strength of simply supported beam: The impact strength of plasticized transparent PVC is ≥10 kJ/m² (ISO 179 standard, ordinary PVC is 5 - 8 kJ/m²), which is 5 - 10 times that of PMMA (impact strength ≤2 kJ/m²), and can withstand accidental collisions in daily use (such as display stands, children's toys).
Application scenarios: Transparent PVC is used in medical infusion tubes (requires high flexibility), sports protective gear (such as ski goggles), electronic equipment protective cases (such as mobile phone tempered film substrates), and other fields that require flexibility and impact resistance.
Processing adaptability
Wide processing temperature range
Processing temperature: The melting temperature of transparent PVC is 160-190℃, which can be processed on ordinary injection molding machines and extruders, and the energy consumption is reduced by 30%-50% compared with PMMA;
Flowability: The melt flow rate is higher than PMMA (MFR=2-8 g/10min), suitable for thin-wall injection molding and complex shape extrusion.
Various molding methods
Injection molding, extrusion, and calendering: Transparent PVC can be made into precision parts through injection molding, extrusion molding into tubes/sheets, and calendering processing into decorative panels. The process flexibility is far greater than that of glass;
Quick demoulding: Low surface tension (about 35 mN/m), better demoulding performance than PMMA (surface tension 40-45 mN/m), reducing production cycle (injection molding cycle shortened by 20%-30%).
Application scenarios: Transparent PVC is widely used in large-scale production fields such as disposable medical devices (such as syringe shells), packaging films (such as beverage bottle labels), and architectural decoration (such as plastic steel doors and windows).
Chemical resistance and weather resistance
Chemical corrosion resistance
Acid and alkali resistance: Transparent PVC is stable to dilute acids (such as acetic acid and phosphoric acid), dilute alkalis (such as sodium hydroxide solution, concentration ≤10%) and salt solutions (such as sodium chloride solution), and has no swelling after immersion for 1 year (ordinary PVC is resistant to acids and alkalis but is easily corroded by strong oxidants);
Organic solvent resistance: It is better than PMMA (easily dissolved by acetone) in tolerance to non-polar solvents (such as gasoline and mineral oil), but is sensitive to strong polar solvents (such as carbon tetrachloride) (need to avoid contact).
Weather resistance and UV resistance
Ultraviolet absorber modification: Add benzotriazole ultraviolet absorber. After 5000 hours of outdoor exposure, the yellowing index ΔYI≤2, and the service life is more than 10 years;
Temperature resistance range: long-term use temperature -15℃ to +60℃ (short-term temperature resistance 80℃), brittle temperature is -30℃ (ordinary PVC is -20℃), suitable for low temperature environment (such as outdoor facilities in northern regions).
Application scenarios: Transparent PVC is used for greenhouse covering film, chemical storage tank windows, outdoor advertising light boxes and other fields that need to be exposed to complex environments for a long time.
