Product details
PP Welding Rod Polypropylene Plastic Welding Round Bar

PP Welding Rods are solid cylindrical plastic welding rods made from polypropylene through injection molding or extrusion. They typically come in diameters of 2.0mm, 3.0mm, 4.0mm, 5.0mm, and 6.0mm, and are typically available in rolls of 5kg. They are a core consumable in thermoplastic welding, specifically used for bonding, repairing, or joining components of similar materials (PP to PP) or plastics of similar polarity (such as PP to PE). After softening by heating, they fuse with the parent material, forming a permanent bond that is high-strength, corrosion-resistant, and aging-resistant.

PP welding rods are made of pure or modified polypropylene, and their properties are highly matched to the parent material (the PP plastic component being welded), ensuring a consistent and reliable weld interface.

Core Applications of PP Welding Rods
PP welding rods are primarily used for connecting, repairing, or reinforcing polypropylene (PP) plastic products. Typical applications include:

Industrial Plastic Equipment Repair

Chemical Containers: Repair cracks in PP storage tanks, reactors, and pipe connections (resistant to chemical corrosion, ensuring tightness).

Environmental Protection Equipment: Repair damage to PP exhaust gas treatment towers, water tanks, and filters (acid and alkali resistant, ensuring long-term durability).

Water Treatment Systems: Connect or repair leaks in PP pipe elbows, tees, and valve seats (resistant to scale and microbial corrosion).

Plastic Product Manufacturing

Injection Molded Parts/Sheet Jointing: Weld the seams of large PP plastic panels (such as advertising billboards and anti-corrosion pallets) (seamless connections, improving overall strength).

Complex Structure Molding: Fill PP welding rods into mold cavities via hot air welding or hot melt welding to create custom-shaped plastic parts (such as plastic pallet reinforcement ribs and equipment casings).

Everyday Use and DIY

Household Plastic Repair: Repair cracks or holes in PP storage boxes, sinks, and flower pots (low-cost and durable).

Outdoor Facility Maintenance: Repair broken connections in PP gardening tools, children's toys, and awning brackets (applicable when weather resistance requirements are low).

Special Applications

Food Applications: Select FDA-certified food-grade PP welding rods (e.g., for welding PP food containers and beverage production line accessories).

Medical Aids: Biocompatible PP welding rods (for repairing PP medical devices, such as simple trays and brackets).

Welding Process for PP Welding Rods
The PP welding rod must be heated to a molten state by a heat source, where it will simultaneously melt and fuse with the base material (PP plastic part). Common welding methods include:

Hot Air Welding (most commonly used)

Tools: Hot air welding gun (adjustable temperature, typically set to 230-260°C, slightly above the melting point of PP), PP welding rod, and file/sandpaper (to clean the base material surface).

Steps:
  • Preparation: Use a file or sandpaper to polish the base material surface in the weld area (to remove the oxide layer and oil stains, exposing the fresh PP layer). Clean any remaining debris with acetone or alcohol.
  • Heating the base material: Aim the hot air welding gun at the edge of the weld gap and heat evenly until softened (approximately 160-170°C, until the base material is slightly tacky).
  • Feeding the Welding Rod: Hold the PP welding rod and place its end near the heated area. Once the end of the rod softens (becomes sticky), press it into the weld gap and advance while maintaining continuous heating of the welding torch (to ensure simultaneous melting of the rod and base material).
  • Compression Fusion: Use the welding torch or a dedicated pressure roller to roll along the weld path to squeeze out air bubbles and fully fuse the rod and base material (forming a uniform weld layer approximately 1-2mm thick).
  • Cooling and Solidification: After stopping heating, allow the weld to cool naturally (avoid touching or moving the welded area) until it is fully solidified, which usually takes several minutes to over ten minutes.

Hot Tool Welding (suitable for joining flat plates)

Tools: Hot Tool Welding Machine (heating plate), PP welding rod (or directly melt the edge of the base material).

Steps: Heat the edges of the PP plastic parts until they are molten, then press the edges together with pressure (or insert a welding rod to fill the gap). Cool to form a secure joint.

Ultrasonic Welding (Less commonly used, suitable for small precision parts)

Ultrasonic vibrations generate localized frictional heat, melting the PP welding rod and base material. (Specialized equipment is required and relatively expensive, generally used for small electronic components.)
