Meniscus lens also called concave-convex lens which is a specialized optical element designed to provide unique focusing capabilities. Unlike traditonal Plano-convex or Plano-concave lenses, the meniscus lens features one convex and one concave surface, creating a shape that can either converge or diverge light depending on it's curvature. this makes it an essential component in various optical systems where precise control over light paths is required.
A positive meniscus lens has two spherical surfaces, it's a convex-concave lens and is thicker at the center than at the edges. It's used to minize spherical aberration, when combined with another lens, it will shorten the focal length, and increase the numerical aperture(NA) of system. This increases image resolution and decreases distortion.
A negative meniscus lens is a convex-concave lens thinner at the center than edges. It increases the divergence of the beam without introducing any significant spherical aberration.
Where is convex- concave lens used?
Positive meniscus lens or Negative meniscus lens are used in binoculars, telescopes, cameras, flashlight and eyeglasses. the images are erect and upright, unlike the real images. this is how you can distinguish between concave and convex lens by learning the features of light rays refracting inside the lenses.
Is a concave -convex lens converging?
The concave-concave lens is a converging lens. This is because it's thicker at the middle and thinner at edges allowing it to converge all the light that is incident on it.
