Right Angle Prism is a fundamental optical component designed to reflect light at a 90degree or 180degree, making it an essential tool in various fields including surveying, engineering and scientific research. These prisms are commonly referred to as reflecting prisms, optical square prism or prism squares, and they play a crucial role in ensuring accurate measurements and alignement.
In the field of surveying, the right angle prism mianly serves two roles: one is to act as a cooperating target( the prism) for distance measurement in total stations, and the other is to be used as a simple layout tool to establish a cartesian coordinate system.
Application scenarios
*Right Angle prism serves as the reflector, and is used in conjunction with a total station for high precision distance measurement, this is the most common application in engineering surveying
*Working principle: the infrared/laser signals emitted by the total station are directed onto the right angle surface of the prism.
*Using the total internal reflection(TIR) principle, the light signals are reflected back along the orignal path. the instrument caculates the optical path through phase comparison and determines the precise distance
*Control point measurement, topographic mapping, deformation monitoring of bridges and buildings, in the monitoring of forzen soil and road engineering with small prisms or microprisms are commonl used
